5 Things You Can Only
Do in Kodaikanal
BY JOHNSON MANASSEH
Let's be real. India has no shortage of incredible hill stations. But Kodaikanal? It’s different. People don't just *visit* Kodai; they fall in love with it. They talk about the "feeling" they had there for years afterwards. This "Princess of Hill Stations" has a quirky, quiet magic that just gets under your skin.
It’s in the way the mist plays hide-and-seek with the sun, the smell of pine and eucalyptus that hits you the second you step out of the car, and the pace of life that forces you to just… breathe. If you're planning a trip, forget the standard checklist. Do these five things instead. They’re what make Kodai, well, Kodai.

1. Bike Around That Bonkers Star-Shaped Lake
Yeah, you’ll see Kodaikanal Lake on every postcard. But just looking at it is like only smelling a chocolate—you’re missing the best part. The real magic happens when you rent a bike (the pedal kind, not the motorbike) and take on the 5km loop around it. Trust me, it’s an experience. The air is crazy fresh, and you’ll probably end up riding in and out of patches of cool mist.
You'll see couples on tandem bikes inevitably veering off course, kids begging for ice cream, and old friends just sitting on a bench, watching the world go by. The water is so still it perfectly mirrors the huge trees lining the banks. It’s less of a workout and more of a moving meditation.
My tip? Go stupidly early. Like, sunrise early. You’ll have the path mostly to yourself, the light is gorgeous for photos, and the lake is like a giant, perfect mirror. It’s 100% worth losing a little sleep for.

2. Get Weird with the Weather on Coaker's Walk
This one-mile path along the edge of a cliff is arguably the best way to grasp how stunning Kodaikanal's location is. On a crystal-clear day, the views are absolutely insane—you can see for miles across the valleys. But honestly? I prefer it when it's foggy. When the clouds roll in, Coaker's Walk transforms into this surreal, dreamy pathway where you can barely see ten feet in front of you.
It’s quiet, a little spooky, and utterly magical. And if you get incredibly lucky, you might experience the "Brachem Spectre." This is when the sun casts your shadow onto the mist below and wraps it in a tiny, personal rainbow. It’s a crazy optical illusion that feels like the mountains are giving you a private show.
Perfect for: A morning walk that feels nothing like your morning walk at home.

3. Feel Tiny Next to the Pillar Rocks & Get Spooked by 'Devil's Kitchen'
No sugarcoating it: you can’t skip the Pillar Rocks. These three giant boulders just shoot straight up out of the ground, standing like silent, 400-foot-tall guardians over the whole area. One minute they’re right there, all imposing and grand, and the next, a cloud swallows them whole. It’s pretty humbling.
Now, a bit of a walk away is what the locals used to call **Devil's Kitchen** (though everyone knows it now as **Guna Caves** after that Kamal Haasan movie). Let's be clear: it's less of a "cave" and more of a series of deep, dark, narrow chasms between the rocks.
The roots of ancient trees twist all over the entrance, and the whole place has a cool, creepy vibe. You can totally see why old stories said demons hung out here. It’s not for the claustrophobic, but it’s awesome for anyone who loves a good, natural mystery.
Heads up: The fog loves this spot too. Go before 11 AM for your best shot at actually seeing the rocks before they vanish for the afternoon.

4. Make Your First Stop Silver Cascade Falls
You haven't even officially arrived in Kodaikanal town yet, and bam—there it is. Silver Cascade Falls. This 180-foot waterfall is basically the overflow from Kodai Lake, crashing right down onto the main road. It’s your welcome committee. But the best part isn't just the photo op. It’s the vibe.
The area is buzzing with local vendors selling small-batch homemade chocolates, incredibly fragrant wild honey, and fresh fruit straight from the farms. That sound of roaring water combined with the cheerful haggling just instantly puts you in "vacation mode." It’s the perfect pit stop to shake off the car ride and dive right into the Kodai experience.
Great for: A quick leg-stretch, grabbing your first (of many) boxes of chocolate, and getting excited because you've almost arrived.

5. Eat All The Chocolate. Seriously.
Look, Ooty can keep its commercial chocolate factories. Kodaikanal’s chocolate game is all about the small, family-run shops. You’ll find them everywhere, and they all have their own secret recipes. We’re talking rich, dark chocolate bars, creamy truffles, and chunky fruit-and-nut slabs that are just… better.
They feel handmade because they are. And while you're at it, buy the fruit. I’m not kidding. The strawberries and plums you get from a cart on the side of the road taste *nothing* like the ones in the city. They’re smaller, often a bit misshapen, and packed with so much flavor it’s like you’re tasting a strawberry for the first time.
Buying this stuff isn't just snacking; it’s supporting local families and taking a literal taste of the hills home with you.
Ideal for: Everyone. But especially you. Treat yourself.

Okay, full disclosure: I'm involved with Veladune, our luxury resort. But I'm not just saying this because of that we built this place specifically for this Kodai feeling. We wanted to create a spot where you don't just see the magic, you live in it. And we've found the perfect home for it.
Veladune is nestled in Kookal, a serene and authentic village a little beyond the usual tourist trails. It’s where the true, undisturbed spirit of the Palani Hills lives, surrounded by working farms and pristine landscapes. Opening in just a few months, Veladune is being crafted to be your ideal gateway. Staying with us means:
